HOCO surveillance for RCGP RSC Practices

Thank you for your support in organising Day 35 serology samples for the ‘HOCO surveillance’ - Detection of virologically and serologically confirmed infections with SARS-CoV-2 and their relationship with symptoms in household contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases (HOCO).

You will receive a phone call or email on behalf of the RCGP RSC to organise Day 35 blood sample for index cases and household contacts who have been recruited to this surveillance. Once confirmed, we ask that you contact the index case to arrange a suitable date for blood sample from them and each household member.

A kit for a blood and second self-taken oral fluid (OF) sample for each household member with instructions will be posted by PHE to the household. Households will be instructed to take the unopened package to the RCGP RSC practice, to be opened by the practitioner.

When the household attends your practice*, please read the instruction sheet (download here) and take the blood sample. Following the written instructions, package the blood sample with the self-taken second OF sample (patient will take their own OF sample). This will be posted back by a household member (or practice) using the grey reply paid plastic envelope to Porton Down.

We then ask that the RCGP practice email PHE via its secure NHS.net address with a list of household members from whom samples were taken. (Details are provided on the instruction sheet.)

* If patients are not registered at your practice, please ensure you temporarily register them prior to taking bloods. Also remember to code the following in patient records (CMR):

‘Save sample for serum serology’ (SNOMED CT ID: 509571000000108)

ID ‘43L. Sample serology’ for practices which do not have the above description.
