Primary Care Workload Observatory (WLO)
RCGP Workload Observatory (WLO)
This is a first iteration of our Workload Observatory (WLO) focusing on seasonal illness.
This WLO reports on trends in activity across nationally representative network of general practices.
Background
It is well known that GPs are becoming increasingly busy and seeing patients with multiple and more complex conditions, however the evidence to support this is limited. With this in mind, NHS England have provided funding for the RCGP Research and Surveillance Centre (RCGP RSC) and Surrey Heartlands Health & Care Partnership to work collaboratively to develop a Workload Observatory.
The RCGP RSC Primary Care Workload Observatory is currently funded until June 2019.

Aims / deliverables
The project aims to provide hard, near real time evidence on current workload levels as well as a picture of the complexity of cases that are increasingly being seen in general practice. This in turn will help drive national policy and inform national strategy.
- To increase the number of practices in the RCGP RSC network both nationally and locally
- To develop a dashboard for network practices to feedback information about workload
- To develop an online training package to explain the use of the dashboard and assist with the improvement of data collection
- To develop a questionnaire with which to collect additional qualitative information about general practice workload to compliment the quantitative data collected via the dashboard
