ORCHID incorporates the RCGP Research Surveillance Centre (RSC). The RSC has been the primary source for disease surveillance in England for over 60 years.
ORCHID is a unique research platform which holds data from multiple UK clinical systems (e.g., EMIS and TPP) and which can link primary care data with other health data. ORCHID is used to carry out surveillance, epidemiological, trial and prospective studies.
Surveillance
We have been the primary source for disease surveillance in England for over 60 years. The RCGP RSC has nearly 2000 practices in England and Wales contributing pseudonymised data for national research and surveillance purposes.
Epidemiology
ORCHID-E will be populated using a rolling retrospective update of around 19 million patients registered at English and Welsh GP practices. Data will under go a procedure of double-pseudonymisation prior to inclusion in the ORCHID-E platform.
Trials and Prospective Studies
ORCHID T/P supports our researchers in designing their trials and other interventional studies. Additionally, the platform will support remote follow up.

The RSC PPIE Group is our growing network of people who want to learn about, influence and shape our public health work. Our network is open to anyone wanting to learn more about using health data for public benefit, and research looking at infectious diseases and respiratory conditions.
Professional Engagement
We are always looking for feedback from primary care professionals to co-produce and develop our surveillance and research work. We would love to hear views from across the general practice workforce including: GPs, Nurses, Pharmacists, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Healthcare Assistants, Social Prescribers, Care Coordinators, Practice Managers, PCN Managers, Digital Leads, and Receptionists.
