About us
History
ORCHID was rapidly developed in the early weeks of 2020 in direct response to the global pandemic, supported by urgent competitively awarded COVID research funding (CI, Richard Hobbs). The aim was to support a rapid expansion of primary care practices (increased from 300 to nearly 2000) supplying routine NHS data for the purposes of research and surveillance. This particularly encompassed the ability to follow up subjects in national COVID primary care platform trials (PRINCIPLE & PANORAMIC, CIs Chris Butler & Richard Hobbs), the COVID diagnostics trial (RAPTOR), and the Oxford-RCGP Research and Surveillance Centre (RSC) (PI, Simon de Lusignan) supplying twice weekly flu and COVID incidence rates for UKHSA. The platform was designed to be resilient to high rates of data ingest and capable of supporting multiple simultaneous queries within a highly secure trusted-research environment.
