ORCHID-E Case Studies
NIHR Policy Research Unit (PRU) in Cancer Awareness, Screening and Early Diagnosis
The NIHR PRUs play a vital role in making sure the government and arm’s length bodies have the best possible information and evidence available when making policy decisions about health and social care. Using real-world patient data held in ORCHID-E and advanced analytics techniques, researchers from University of Oxford and UCL are shaping the future of early cancer detection as well as improving care and outcomes for patients. With guidance from key policy stakeholders, the team aims to support the NHS to achieve its goal of diagnosing 75% of cancers at an early stage by 2028.
Zero Hidden Hunger EU – Reducing Micronutrient Deficiencies
Zero Hidden Hunger EU is a Horizon Europe funded research project aiming to provide estimates of the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies and their associated health costs, focused on high-risk population subgroups. Using ORCHID-E, we are performing a retrospective cohort study between 2015 and 2025 to measure the prevalence of deficiencies in relevant micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) measured in blood and urine among relevant subgroups of the population including children, pregnant women, ethnic minorities, and older adults. The findings from this study will identify the prevalence of Hidden Hunger in the UK and will inform Europe-wide modelling of estimates. Identifying risk factors for Hidden Hunger will also help inform the appropriate strategies to tackle this nationally and internationally.
